  • Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls - Prefect Team 2024!

    Published 25/03/24

    Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls - Prefect Team

    Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who applied to join our WPSfG Prefect team. It is not an easy process to become an WPSfG Prefect. First, students must complete an application form and then from these some are invited to interview for the role. In conjunction with the application and interview, we look at attendance, punctuality and behaviour of each student, as much as possible, building up a complete picture of each student and their contributions to our school community.  A number of our students have challenged themselves to take part in this process, and they should all be congratulated on their hard work and effort.

    This team will now begin receiving training for their role. Some will be invited to our ‘Head Prefect Panel’ where we begin our selection process for our new Senior Prefects, Assistant Head Prefects, Deputy Head Prefects and Head Prefect.

    I am very pleased to announce our new Prefect Team for 2024:

    Juweerat Rachael Samira Devine Oluwafunmilola Joshlyn Sudenaz
    Treasure Temi Jumara Yana Gloria Pearl Kelly
    Amirat Emma Haddy Rosita Reina-Sofia Mirshika Chloe
    Yasmin Cara Samira Mirabel Shola Isabelle Praise
    Sharon Sophia Fiona-May Oluwasemilore Danielle Sola Angela

    Huge congratulations to all these students for their hard work and dedication throughout their time at WPSfG. We have an exciting year ahead with such a strong team of Student Leaders.

  • International Women's Day 2024 - Our activities & celebrations

    Published 15/03/24

    At Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls, we celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday, 8th March. Various events and workshops took place in the school, and both staff and students had a wonderful time. Let's hear from two of our Year 10 prefects who shared their reflections on the day:

    ‘International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated annually on March 8th to commemorate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women worldwide. It is also a day to raise awareness about gender equality and advocate for women's rights. International Women's Day serves as a reminder of the progress made and the work still to be done towards achieving true gender equality. As a girls school recognising and celebrating women's achievements is not only a matter of justice and equality but also essential for building inclusive societies and fostering sustainable development. It is important to us as a school because International Women's Day holds significant importance in highlighting the progress made towards gender equality while also acknowledging the ongoing challenges and inequalities that women continue to face.’

    - Samira, Year 10 Prefect

    ‘As part of our celebrations, students took part in workshops throughout the day. At the workshops there was an incredible amount of awe-inspiring women who shared their well-aged wisdom, from life experiences to periods. According to multiple Year 8 sources the period workshops for Years 7, 8 and 9 had a lasting impact proven by their ability to recall key information. For instance, 44% of girls do not understand what happens during their period. This statistic alone emphasises how important these workshops are and indeed the continued relevance of International Women's Day. Furthermore, many Year 8s learnt new information on how to manage their periods, a majority of them were not aware of period cups for instance! In addition to these workshops Year 10 also took part in their own set of talks broaching difficult topics and research material. One workshop identified deep rooted issues in intersectional feminism - adultification. Another workshop wholesomely encouraged open discussions on self love and identity while facing tougher topics such as personal insecurities. Overall, every workshop was crafted beautifully to make this year's International Women's Day something to remember.’

    - Temi, Year 10 Prefect

  • International Women's Day - Friday 8th March 2024

    Published 01/03/24

    IWD 2024

    International Women's Day 2024 campaign theme is 'Inspire Inclusion'

    The campaign theme for International Women's Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion.

    When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world.

    And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.

    Collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.

    With well over a century of history and change, the first International Women's Day (IWD) was held in March 1911. IWD isn't country, group or organisation specific. It's a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women's equality.

  • World Book Day - Thursday 7th March 2024

    Published 01/03/24

    World Book Day changes lives through a love of books and reading.

    World Book Day was created by UNESCO on 23rd April 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading. As World Book Day founder, Baroness Gail Rebuck, recalls “We wanted to do something to reposition reading and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”

    World Book Day Website

    A book trail will take place around the school for Year 7 & 8 students. Poetry sessions will be held in the library during lunchtime. Additionally, The Masked Reader activity will run during form time, and various writing and art competitions will be launched across different departments.

    On World Book Day, journalist and author Maya Oppenheim will visit to speak to Year 9 students. Maya, a correspondent at The Independent, released her book "The Pocket Guide to the Patriarchy" last August. Her visit will coincide with both World Book Day and International Women’s Day.

  • Proposal to change the timings of the school day

    Published 26/02/24

    Click to download the Proposal to change the timings of the school day letter

    Re: Proposal to change the timings of the school day

    26th February 2024

    Dear parents and carers,

    I am writing to you to consult you on proposed changes to the school day at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls.

    The reason for this proposed change is to ensure that students can safely access transport to and from school with the expansion of the Poly Sixth Form to include our girls.

    We are aware from our own monitoring that public transport frequency is not adequate to meet the demands of two adjacent full schools finishing at similar times, resulting in long waits for students and congested bus stops. We are also aware that buses are often full when students try to access them on their way to school from the Plumstead area, leading to lateness.

    In addition, we are moving to staggered lunches as we are limited on our inside and outside spaces. Due to this we also had to change the length of our periods to 1-hour lessons to accommodate these changes.

    We believe that the following changes are necessary to ensure safer dismissal of students as well as easier transport to school in the mornings.

    For Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls changes can be summarised as:

    • A 15 minute earlier start time of 8.15am every day;
    • A 10 minute earlier finish time of 2.55pm every day except Wednesday;
    • A finish time of 2.05pm on Wednesdays which will include an afternoon registration;
    • We will no longer need to have different finishing times in Week A and Week B, meaning that the finishing times above are consistent each week;
    • The lengths of periods would be 5 x 1 hour instead of 6 x 50 minutes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays;
    • The length of periods would be 4 x 1 hour instead of 5 x 50 minutes on Wednesdays;
    • Staggered lunches of 40 minutes each for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4;
    • Interventions that we run after school will also start and finish 15 minutes earlier, normally from 3.00-3.30pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays;
    • We will continue to meet the minimum length that the Department of Education requires of 32.5 hours per week.

    Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, our brother school right next door, intends to start at 8.40am and finish by 3.20pm, creating a 25-minute gap between both schools’ start and finishing times. This difference in start and finish times will make students’ access to public transport significantly easier and safer, both to and from school.

    The new school day timings would therefore be as follows:

    Should these changes be approved, they would come into effect from 2nd September 2024.  The information in this letter has also been sent to local bus companies, our catering providers and a range of other interested parties to make sure that we gather a variety of opinions.

    I appreciate that these changes may affect you, in terms of childcare or working arrangements for example, and in terms of your child’s education. For this reason, I would like to invite you to give your written feedback by emailing your responses to consultation@woolwichpolygirls.co.uk by Friday 29th March 2024.

    We will also host drop-ins for parents and carers on the following dates and times so you can give feedback in person. Those dates are:

    • Monday 4th March: 3.30-4.30pm
    • Monday 18th March: 3.30-4.30pm

    I also appreciate that we consulted on changes to the school day in 2021. I intend this change to be long-term, lasting for years beyond the expansion of the Sixth Form. It is this increased number of students that necessitates the change.

    We will release the results of the consultation by Friday 3rd May 2024 via our website and My Child at School and the final decision will be made at that point.

    Yours faithfully,

    Ms. L. Williams

  • Royal Borough of Greenwich letter to parents/carers: School Attendance

    Published 22/02/24

    Click to download the Royal Borough of Greenwich Attendance Letter February 2024

    Dear Parents and Carers,

    I trust this letter finds you well and that your children have enjoyed the half term break and are settling into the new term, with enthusiasm and a desire to learn.

    As we head into this new term, I would like to emphasise the importance of good attendance at school. While some children face occasional illnesses or barriers to attending school, maintaining regular attendance is key to ensuring they receive the education and support they need to thrive.

    Why is good attendance so important?

    1. Learning Consistency: Regular attendance ensures that your child can consistently engage with their teachers and peers, contributing to better learning outcomes.
    2. Social Development: School provides a vital environment for children to develop socially, build relationships, and develop interpersonal skills. Missing school can disrupt this crucial aspect of their growth.
    3. Academic Progress: Absenteeism can result in missing out on key learning experiences and valuable classroom activities, potentially leading to gaps in your child's knowledge. There is documented data on the correlation between absences, academic achievement and lifelong outcomes.
    4. Preparation for the Future: Regular attendance helps your child build a strong work ethic, which is essential for their future endeavours.
    5. Sanctions for irregular school attendance. As well as the impact on your children, parents and care givers can face sanctions for not ensuring their children’s regular school attendance. Action, we strive to avoid.

    We understand that there can be challenges to ensuring regular school attendance and we are committed to supporting parents/care givers and children to enable regular school attendance. Each school is committed to:

    • Providing a clear Attendance Policy, clarifying the school rules regarding attendance.
    • Providing guidelines on when it is appropriate to keep a child home due to illness, and when it is safe for them to attend school.
    • Supporting with health and well-being concerns; Parents are encouraged to communicate any health concerns promptly. Parents are encouraged to communicate any other issues that are impacting on their ability to ensure regular school attendance, so that supportive measures can be put into place, via school resources, signposting and/or involving or referring to support agencies.
    • Schools will work on and review strategies to build the resilience of their students, equipping them to adapt to challenges that may arise during their school journey.

    The Local Authority, School staff and teachers are committed to providing the best educational experience for your children. We believe that by working together with parents and care givers, we can create a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment that will enable your child to succeed.

    With your support and collaboration in encouraging your children’s good attendance, we can endeavour to ensure they make the most of their learning opportunities and lifelong outcomes.

    Kind regards

    Florence Kroll Director of Children’s Service
