  • Winter Water Safety

    Published 18/01/24

RLSS UK offer safety advice for winter water safety, with simple steps to keep safe during the winter:

    1. Never go onto the ice to play, to retrieve an object, or a pet
    2. Never enter the ice to rescue somebody, call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service

Click here to read the full article on the Royal Life Saving Society UK Website

What to do if you fall through the ice:
    • Keep calm and shout for ‘help’
    • Spread your arms across the surface of the ice in front of you
    • If the ice is strong enough, kick your legs to slide onto the ice
    • Lie flat and pull yourself towards the bank
    • If the ice breaks, work your way to the bank-breaking the ice in front of you anyway
    • If you cannot climb out, wait for help and keep as still as possible. Press your arms by your side and keep your legs together. Keep your head clear of the water
    • Once you are safe, go to hospital immediately for a check-up
What to do if you see someone fall through the ice:
    • Shout for assistance and phone the emergency services – call 999 or 112
    • Do not walk or climb onto the ice to attempt a rescue
    • Shout to the casualty to ‘keep still’ and offer reassurance to keep them calm
    • Try and reach them from the bank using a rope, pole, tree branch, clothing tied together or anything else which can extend your reach
    • When reaching from the bank, lie down to avoid being pulled onto the ice
    • If you cannot reach them, slide something which floats, such as a plastic bottle or football, across the ice for them to hold onto to stay afloat whilst help is on the way
    • If the casualty is too far away, do not attempt to rescue them. Wait for the emergency services while calming and reassuring the casualty

It can be easy to fall out of the routine of keeping active as the weather gets colder, but if you build it into your daily routine, you'll be moving more without even realising! Although some may still feel anxious about going outside, going for a short walk in the fresh air can make both your body and mind feel good.

  • Reminder - Christmas Jumper Day - Friday 8th December 2023

    Published 07/12/23

    Dear families,

As you may be aware, Friday 8th December is Christmas Jumper Day in aid of Save the Children.

We are encouraging as many students and staff members as possible to wear their Christmas jumpers and for us to raise as much money as we can for this brilliant cause.

Students can wear their Christmas jumper over their school shirt and tie; the rest of their uniform should be worn as usual.  If they are wearing a Christmas jumper, they do not have to wear their blazer for the day but can do so if they wish.  (Students not wearing a Christmas jumper should be in full school uniform).

We are asking that students donate a minimum of £1 which will be collected by form tutors on the morning of Friday 8th December.

Thank you for your on-going support of the charitable causes we have supported as a school, and we look forward to seeing all of the students wearing their festive jumpers!  (There may be a prize for the most creative!)

    Yours faithfully,

    Ms Z Drysdale

    PD Co-ordinator/ Science Teacher

  • Reminder - Academic Review Day on Tuesday 19th December 2023 for Years 7, 8, 9 & 10

    Published 04/12/23

    Dear Parents/Carers,

    Re: ARD Tuesday 19th December

Our next Review Day is on Tuesday 19th December and is for Years 7-10 only.  (All Year 11 students will be attending different sessions from 10.45-3.00pm and will have a parents' evening in place of the Review Day.)

The review meetings will have a behaviour and pastoral focus.  You will be meeting with your daughters’ form tutor, and they will be reviewing her attendance, punctuality, behaviour, and achievements, as well as reviewing previous targets and setting ones for the new term.

It is vital that your daughter attends the appointment with a parent/carer or another suitable adult.  (If nobody can attend with your daughter, please indicate on the reply slip that was sent to you).  Your daughter will be expected to come to her appointment alone and a follow-up call will be made to parents/carers in the new year if it cannot be done before the appointment.

All appointments must be attended on time and students should be in full school uniform. The appointment will count as their attendance for the day.

Appointments will be allocated on a first come, first served basis in the following slots:

    • Session 1: 10.30am-12.30pm
    • Session 2: 1.00pm-3.30pm

If you have any questions at all, please do contact your daughter's form tutor in the first instance.

  • Wear purple day - Thursday 23rd November 2023

    Published 17/11/23

    Dear families,

As you may be aware, on 26th November 2022, two teenagers in our local community tragically lost their lives due to knife crime. Kearne Solanke and Charlie Bartolo were only 16 years old when they were stabbed and killed. This tragic loss affected both our local and school communities, and both boys have family members linked to our schools. We want to remember them both one year on and pay tribute to them by raising money for the Ben Kinsella Trust.

The Ben Kinsella Trust is a charity set up in honour of Ben who also lost his life to knife crime 15 years ago.  The Trust was set up by his family and their website describes their work as: We educate young people on the dangers of knife crime and help them to make positive choices to stay safe. Our workshops follow the journey of both the victim and the offender through a series of unique and immersive experiences to show young people how choices and consequences are intrinsically linked.”

We will be using resources from the Trust to deliver Personal Development lessons for our students to remind them of the impact that knives can have on individuals, families, and communities.

On Thursday 23rd November, we will be having a ‘Wear Purple Day’ to raise money for the charity.

We ask that students contribute £1 on the day (they of course can donate more if they are able).  Students/families that are not in a financial situation where they cannot contribute financially are still able to take part should they wish to, as this is about us standing together in Kearne and Charlie’s memory.

On the day, students can wear an item or combination of items that are purple from the following list:

    • Purple socks/tights
    • Purple shirt/polo
    • Purple hair band/bow/ribbon/accessory
    • Purple tie

Students will still need to be in the rest of their school uniform with their purple item or items, (blazer, tie, skirt/trousers, shoes etc) and will not be permitted to have purple nails or make up/face paint.

If your daughter is worried about anything of this nature, please encourage her to speak to her form tutor or another member of staff as well as someone at home.

Thank you in advance for your support for this cause.

    Ms E Smith

    DSL/Assistant Headteacher
