  • WPSfG supporting LGBT+ History Month 2024

    Published 19/02/24

    LGBT+ History Month

Claiming our past – Celebrating our present – Creating our future

LGBT+ History Month is for everyone; whether you work in education, a museum, a library or an art gallery, a business, a service, or are a member of a network/social group or an individual.

It is celebrated every February across the UK and was founded in 2004 by Schools OUT UK  co-chairs, Paul Patrick & Professor Emeritus Sue  Sanders. It was first celebrated in February 2005.

For so long LGBT+ people’s history was hidden, following the repeal of Section 28, UK LGBT+ History Month was created to:

    • claim our past
    • celebrate our present
    • create our future

We are delighted to announce that the UK 2024 LGBT+ History Month theme is:

    Medicine – #UnderTheScope

The 2024 theme celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today.

We want to showcase the amazing work of LGBT+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, in providing healthcare, especially during the pandemic. Whilst still shining a light on the history of the LGBT+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare which has been extremely complicated leaving LGBT+ people still facing health inequalities even today.

Click to view the LGBT+ History Month 2024 Website

Ms Sewell, Ms Spencer (library) and Ms Donald are starting a Rainbow Club for our LGBTQ+ students. This will take place from 3pm every Thursday in the library. Students should register with their tutor before joining us.

This is a space for students to meet, chat and enjoy time together where they can feel safe to be themselves and possibly discuss their experiences with likeminded folk. We foresee it being led by their needs and very relaxed.

  • Key Stage 3 Academic Review Day - Friday 9th February 2024

    Published 05/02/24

    Dear Parent/Carer,

This is a reminder that our Key Stage 3 Academic Review Day (ARD) on Friday 9th February.  School will not be open for usual lessons that day as staff will be meeting with Year 7, 8 and 9 students and their families to discuss their academic progress.

Year 10 students will be working from home and will have work set for them to complete via MS Teams.

Year 11 students will have two mock exams on this day. There is a full cohort English Language exam in the morning and a Geography exam in the afternoon. Students not taking GCSE Geography will be dismissed following the English exam for independent study and revision.  Further details of this will be sent to Year 11 students and families.

For our Key Stage 3 students, we will be allocating appointment times for core subjects and subjects where the student isn’t meeting their expected grade.  There will then be the opportunity for families to book further appointments for any other subject of their choice.  This will be on a first come, first served basis.  Details of your exact appointment times and how to book further appointments will be released a few days before the ARD.  However, we ask that you keep the following time slots free as all of your appointments will be allocated in these windows:

    • Year 7 – 8.30am - 10.30am
    • Year 8 – 11.00am - 1.00pm
    • Year 9 – 1.30pm - 3.30pm

Appointments with each teacher will be approximately 5 minutes, with time allocated to move between rooms, therefore we expect each student’s appointments to take a minimum of 90 minutes in their allocated slot.

Students should be accompanied by a parent or family member wherever possible, however if this is not possible, they should still attend the appointments themselves as it counts as their school attendance for the day.  Students should also attend in full school uniform.

    Ms E Smith

    Assistant Head Teacher

  • Reminder - Non-uniform Day Thursday 8th February 2024

    Published 05/02/24

    Dear families,

Our students have come together and requested a non-uniform day to raise money for Unicef who are helping children around the world who are suffering in a humanitarian crisis. The charity provides food, emergency relief, water, medication, support with hygiene and education to children that are suffering in areas of conflict or deprivation.

Our non-uniform day will be on Thursday 8th February, and we ask that students donate £1 to the appeal, which will be collected on the day in form time.

There are some rules around the dress code for the day which we expect all students to adhere to and ask parents and carers to support this.

    1. No sliders/crocs/heels/open toes shoes for health and safety reasons (trainers are allowed as well as closed toe shoes/boots).
    2. Lanyards must be worn and school bags, PE kit or any other equipment needed for the  day are still essential.
    3. No hotpants, miniskirts, or crop tops

Please remember to consider that it is a school environment and students should be dressed in a way which is appropriate.  If students dress in clothing which is inappropriate, we will have to call parents and send them home. It also means that we may not be able to run events like this in the future.

Thank you for your support with this.

    Ms E Smith

    Assistant Head Teacher
