The session explored Energy in Food, and students were fully engaged as the presenter demonstrated how different foods release energy in surprising ways. From dramatic examples using methane gas to explanations of how the body converts food into usable energy, the show brought science to life in a fun and memorable way.

This hands‑on experience helped deepen students’ understanding of energy while sparking plenty of curiosity - exactly what British Science Week aims to inspire.

These inspirational guests generously gave up their time to speak with our students, sharing their journeys, challenges, and achievements across an amazing variety of careers.

Our Year 7s took part in a Famous Careers Carousel, rotating between speakers and exploring new possibilities for their futures.
Meanwhile, Years 8 - 10 enjoyed interactive assemblies led by four of our brilliant guest speakers - each offering insight, motivation, and real-life stories that truly resonated with our girls.

We were incredibly fortunate to host women from such a wide range of professions, including the police, fire brigade, solicitors, MP, funeral directors, local councillors, health & safety, dog grooming, and many more.

We were especially proud to showcase women in underrepresented industries, such as site managers in large-scale construction projects and project managers, demonstrating the power of representation and visibility in shaping young minds.

A huge thank you to every speaker who joined us - your presence made a lasting impact, and our girls left feeling inspired, empowered, and full of ambition.

On Saturday 28th February, the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Qualifying Tournament was proudly hosted at WPG a Champion.org, bringing together young innovators from across the region for an inspiring day of robotics, collaboration and competition.

The event welcomed 12 schools and approximately 100 students and staff, all coming together to celebrate STEM excellence and competitive spirit.

We were delighted to have one team representing Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys and two teams representing Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls.

All three teams competed exceptionally well, demonstrating technical skill, resilience, teamwork and determination throughout the tournament. We are incredibly proud of every team member for their hard work and commitment.

A huge congratulations to the Girls’ School team for winning the prestigious Reach Award.

We would also like to recognise the outstanding girls who volunteered to serve customers in the tuck shop and also supported the FTC event. From preparing teams for inspection to managing pit queues and ensuring everything ran smoothly, their contribution was invaluable to the success of the day.

Events like the FTC Qualifier highlight the power of teamwork, innovation and opportunity. The energy, enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by all students made the tournament a true success. We are extremely proud of staff and students involved and look forward to even more achievements ahead.

Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls was proud to host the Greenwich Regional Final of Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge on 24 February 2026. The evening was a powerful celebration of youth voice, confidence and creativity, with each speaker demonstrating remarkable courage and authenticity.

Representing Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls were three exceptional Year 10 students - Yaiza, Daniela and Fatiha all of whom delivered confident and compelling speeches that made a strong impression on the audience.

However, the highlight of the evening for our school, and a moment of immense pride for our entire community, was the outstanding achievement of Fatiha Sanni, who was named Regional Champion. Her speech was delivered with exceptional clarity, insight and emotional impact, earning her the top honour of the night. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment and the hard work, dedication and maturity she demonstrated on stage. This is a truly significant achievement, and we could not be prouder.

The results of the evening were:

Regional Champion: Fatiha - Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls

Runner-Up: Nia - Eltham Hill School

Third Place: Isabella - Eltham Hill School

We congratulate all the winners and commend every participant for contributing to a memorable and meaningful event.

Adding to the atmosphere were superb musical performances from our talented students Elisha, Neriah and Isimeme, who showcased their vocal and piano skills and helped make the evening even more special.

We were also delighted to support our partner school, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys, whose Year 10 representative Dyuvan delivered a fantastic speech and represented his school with confidence and conviction.

A heartfelt thank you to the Jack Petchey Foundation for making this opportunity possible, and to Councillor Ann‑Marie Cousins of Abbey Wood Ward, who kindly joined us to present the certificates and awards to our young people. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ms J. Ross, whose dedication and behind‑the‑scenes leadership made this event, and our involvement in the Speak Out Challenge, such a success.

Hosting the regional final was an honour for Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls, and the evening highlighted the courage, talent and sense of community that define our students. It was a night we will remember with great pride - especially as we celebrate Fatiha’s remarkable success as Regional Champion.

‘It was a wonderful evening that showcased the confidence and talent of our young people. I was especially proud of Fatiha, whose outstanding speech earned her the title of Regional Champion - a remarkable achievement for her and for our school. I was equally proud of Yaiza and Daniela, who represented the school so beautifully and spoke from the heart with honesty and courage. The evening highlighted once again how remarkable, creative and talented our young people are.’
Ms L. Williams, Headteacher

Relive the incredible moment Fatiha was announced as the Greenwich Regional Champion at Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are writing to urgently remind all families about the importance of safe and considerate driving during the morning drop‑off.

We have seen an increase in unsafe behaviours around the roundabout and school entrance. This includes cars stopping in dangerous locations, blocking the road, double‑parking, stopping on the roundabout, and performing illegal U‑turns at the beginning of Birchdene Drive. These actions are creating an extremely unsafe environment for students, staff, and other road users.

We have reported these issues to both the police and the Greenwich Parking Ticket Teams and have requested that officers attend during the peak time of 7:50am–8:20am to observe the situation and issue tickets where necessary. Their presence is essential to help prevent the dangerous and illegal manoeuvres that continue to take place.

Please ensure that you:

• Do not stop or drop off on or near the roundabout
• Do not double‑park or mount pavements
• Do not perform U‑turns on Birchdene Drive or the school vehicle entrance - please continue to the end and turn safely at the roundabout
• Only stop in safe, legal locations
• Drive patiently and calmly - a short delay is far safer than taking a risk

As an alternative, students can be safely dropped off in the town centre and walk through the underpass into school. This helps reduce congestion and keeps the entrance area safer for everyone.

Our priority is always the safety of every student and member of staff. We are working closely with external agencies, but we urgently need all parents and carers to play their part in keeping the area safe.

Thank you to those who consistently follow the rules and help keep our community safe. Your cooperation genuinely makes a difference.

Safer Internet Day 2026: Helpful AI Safety Resources for Parents and Carers

Safer Internet Day 2026 takes place on Tuesday 10 February, with the theme “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.” This theme reflects how artificial intelligence now shapes many aspects of children’s online lives, from personalised recommendations to voice assistants and homework tools.

To support families, we have gathered a collection of trusted UK-specific resources offering practical guidance, conversation ideas, and age-appropriate support.

Official Guidance from the UK Safer Internet Centre

The UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC) provides the key resources for Safer Internet Day 2026. Their dedicated hub includes advice on using AI safely, talking to children about new technologies, and supporting responsible digital choices at home.

Practical Advice and Conversation Starters

A parent-friendly information letter is also available. It explains how AI affects the information children see online, how AI may be used during homework, and the potential risks linked with misuse such as scams or manipulated images. It also provides conversation starters to help families approach the topic confidently.
Download the letter

ParentLine – UK’s AI Online Safety Assistant

ParentLine is the UK’s first AI‑powered online safety assistant for parents. It provides clear, practical guidance on online risks, apps, games, social media, AI tools, cyberbullying, privacy settings and more. It uses verified information from the NSPCC, Internet Matters and the UK Safer Internet Centre.

AI Safety Resources Designed for Parents

The London Grid for Learning (LGfL) offers specific materials to help families navigate generative AI. These include an explainer video, a downloadable parent letter, and a ready-made presentation for running parent information sessions.
LGfL resources

NSPCC – AI Safety Tips for Parents

The NSPCC provides trusted, expert‑backed tips on how AI tools work, what risks they pose to children, how to recognise AI‑generated content and how to talk to children about what they’re seeing online.

UNICEF – Guidance on AI and Children

Global guidance focused on children’s rights in the age of AI. Helps parents understand AI risks, child data protection, fairness, transparency and how global changes affect young people.

Why These Resources Matter

AI is increasingly present in children’s everyday digital interactions. Whether through search results, games, online platforms, homework support or social media, children often engage with AI without realising it. Providing families with accurate information and practical tools helps children:

Recognise when AI is being used

Think critically about information online

Understand the limitations and risks of AI

Make safe and responsible choices

These resources empower parents and carers to guide children confidently and support positive digital experiences.

On Monday 26th January, our Year 7 students took part in an exciting Tetrahedron Challenge led by the Helix Group and they absolutely rose to the occasion.

Throughout the workshop, students developed key transferable skills including communication, teamwork, active listening, and problem‑solving as they worked together to design and build a prototype tetrahedron for a playground structure.

They also had the chance to explore a range of careers within the construction industry, learning about roles such as quantity surveyor, health and safety manager, and engineer. This hands‑on insight opened their eyes to the many pathways available in STEM and the built environment.

We are especially proud that our girls were the first students in the country to take part in this new workshop, which will soon be rolled out nationwide. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and natural aptitude for STEM shone through from start to finish.

Thank you to Ms Barrett for bringing this wonderful learning opportunity to our students. A huge well done to all involved - the future of engineering is looking bright.

The skills learned are transferable and have increased in their use in other areas e.g., schools and workplace settings and other agencies and services. They have been endorsed by employers.

NVR stands for non-violent resistance, and the programme addresses challenging, problematic, and self-destructive, concerning behaviours in children and adolescents. The methods and ideas of non-violent resistance were first introduced by Professor Haim Omer in Tel Aviv and stem from the political struggles of such figures as Mahatma Gandhi, and civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks. They are used in family settings and the wider community. The course can help parents and carers overcome their sometimes sense of helplessness, develop a support network that helps address destructive behaviours both in and out of the home and improve relationships between family members and the outside world.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a national day that takes place on 27 January. We commemorate the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, and the millions more murdered under Nazi persecution. Prejudice still continues today within our communities and across the UK. We also learn and commemorate where persecution led in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has confirmed that the theme for HMD 2026 is “Bridging Generations”. This theme highlights the vital role each generation plays in carrying forward the memory of the Holocaust and more recent genocides. As survivors grow older, the responsibility to listen, learn, and share their stories becomes a collective act of remembrance and a commitment to building a safer, more compassionate future.

It encourages communities, schools, and organisations to explore how memory is passed on, how stories shape understanding, and how we can all contribute to safeguarding truth against distortion or denial.

It Began with Words – New Holocaust Memorial Day Film

It Began with Words explores how the Holocaust began not with violence, but with words, with stereotypes, prejudice and silence. Through survivor testimony and historical insight, it shows how ordinary people and everyday choices allowed hatred to grow. By understanding how the Holocaust unfolded, we can recognise the warning signs of prejudice today and use our voices to stand against it. Holocaust Memorial Day Trust | It Began with Words – New Holocaust Memorial Day Film

Period 1 brought a burst of curiosity and excitement as Year 7 explored how much energy different foods contain. The class carried out a hands‑on practical where they burned samples of food, in this case, different crisps to see how much they could heat a measured amount of water.

What the students learned

Different foods contain different amounts of energy

Burning food transfers energy as heat

Heating water allows us to measure that energy change

Repeating tests helps calculate a reliable mean temperature rise

Energy in food can be calculated using the formula:

Energy (J)=mass of water (g)×temperature rise (°C)×4.2

The room was full of enthusiasm as students compared which crisp produced the biggest temperature increase. The students were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions and working brilliantly as young scientists. It was a wonderful example of practical learning bringing theory to life.

Thursday 11th December, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls hosted its annual Winter Concert - and what an incredible evening it was! With a packed audience, the event showcased the outstanding talent and creativity of our students, making this year’s concert bigger and better than ever.

We were thrilled to welcome staff and students from Bannockburn Primary School, who delighted the audience with two beautiful festive performances, complete with Christmas jumpers and Santa hats. Their contribution added an extra sparkle to the night!

Mr B. Griffiths, Music Lead at Bannockburn Primary School, shared this heartfelt message:

"Thank you for having us this evening. For quite a few of those children, it was their first out‑of‑school performance and they were VERY excited. The opportunity is greatly appreciated. The atmosphere of support in the room was brilliant. It’s really lovely to see the way your students support each other so sincerely (and they made our children feel like stars!). That feeling comes from your hard work and I hope you’re rightly proud of them all."

The concert featured a wide variety of performances, including stunning solos, our vibrant Concert Band, the Year 10 Band, and a special reprise from this year’s school production of SIX. Our Queens returned to the stage for one more unforgettable performance, singing and dancing to songs from the show. The evening also included captivating piano and guitar pieces, highlighting the depth of musical talent within our school community.

A huge thank you goes to Ms Stamp and Ms Wright for their exceptional coordination, and to all the staff working tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event possible. These concerts are always such a special occasion, bringing our school community together in celebration of music, creativity, and festive cheer.

Ms Williams, Headteacher, shared her thoughts on the evening:
"The Winter Concert is one of my favourite events of the year. It’s a true celebration of the incredible talent we have at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls and the sense of community that makes our school so special. Seeing our students perform with such confidence and joy is inspiring, and I’m so proud of every single one of them. Thank you to everyone who made this magical evening possible."

On Wednesday 10 December, our school will be taking part in Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day. We know times are tough, so please remember that whatever you can spare would be greatly appreciated. To make donating easier we have set up a JustGiving page. The minimum donation is £1 (remember, you do not have to add the tip if you do not want to!)

Save The Children JustGiving Page

Save the Children are encouraging people not to buy new jumpers for the day. You could upcycle an old jumper, get crafty or head to your local charity shop to buy a pre-loved festive jumper. If you want to get creative and decorate a jumper, the Christmas Jumper Day website contains lots of fun craft ideas.

This year, donating £2 could buy a packet of seeds for a family in Kenya to grow their own food, after drought has killed their crops, or a combined donation of £160 from our whole school could help train a psychological first aider to help children in Ukraine recover from their traumatic experience. We appreciate your support to make Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day a success. Together, we can make the world better with a sweater.

Students can wear their Christmas jumper over their school shirt and tie; the rest of their uniform should be worn as usual. If they are wearing a Christmas jumper, they do not have to wear their blazer for the day but can do so if they wish. (Students not wearing a Christmas jumper should be in full school uniform).

We are asking that students donate a minimum of £1 which can be collected online or will be collected by form tutors on the morning of Wednesday 10th December.

Thank you for your on-going support of the charitable causes we have supported as a school, and we look forward to seeing all our students wearing their festive jumpers!

On 21st July, just before the summer break, staff at Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls discovered a young cat in the school playground. She was underweight, injured, and clearly in need of care, yet remained remarkably friendly.

The following day, staff ensured her safety and took her to Goddard’s Vets in Thamesmead. Although she was microchipped, her owners never responded. It was then revealed that Polly, as she became known, was pregnant.

Miss Gardner kindly offered her home as a safe refuge. On GCSE Results Day, Polly gave birth to six healthy kittens. Each has since been rehomed within the Poly community, ensuring they remain part of our extended family. Polly herself has been spayed, restored to good health, and now lives permanently with Miss Gardner.

This story reflects the dedication of Woolwich Poly staff, who consistently go above and beyond - not only for students, but also for vulnerable members of the wider community.

We extend our thanks to Miss Gardner, her daughter Emma, and all those who supported Polly’s rescue and care.

Science Club Posters & Dancing Raisins

The students at Science Club have been busy combining creativity with curiosity.

First, they designed wonderful posters celebrating famous scientists from all different heritages. Each poster highlighted the achievements of pioneers in science, showing how diverse backgrounds have contributed to discoveries that shape our world today.

Alongside their artistic work, the club carried out a fun practical: the Dancing Raisins experiment.

When raisins are dropped into fizzy soda, they sink because they are denser than the liquid. Carbon dioxide bubbles from the soda cling to the raisins’ rough surfaces, acting like tiny flotation devices. This increases buoyancy, lifting the raisins to the surface. Once the bubbles pop at the top, the raisins lose buoyancy and sink again. The cycle repeats until the soda goes flat.

The students watched with delight as the raisins bobbed up and down like little dancers, learning firsthand about density, buoyancy, and gas release. It was science in motion - simple, visual, and memorable.

Magic Milk Experiment

Science Club also explored the fascinating world of chemistry with the Magic Milk experiment.

Milk contains minerals, proteins, and fats, which can be disrupted by soap. When the students added drops of food colouring to milk and then touched it with dish soap, they witnessed a spectacular display:

This movement disrupts the surface tension of the milk and pushes the food colouring around. The food colouring looks like fireworks because it’s getting bumped around, causing a colour explosion.

The soap breaks the surface tension of the milk. When the soap molecules head for the fats, they form spherical micelles. This causes movement and creates cool bursts and swirls of colour. After all the fat molecules have been found and equilibrium has been reached, there is no more movement.

The experiment was not only visually stunning but also a clear demonstration of how chemistry works at a molecular level. The girls learned how everyday substances – like soap and milk - can reveal the hidden forces of science in action.

When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, many of our staff, students, and families were directly impacted. In true Woolwich Poly spirit, our community came together with compassion, creativity, and generosity to make a difference.

On 14th November, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Girls hosted a vibrant fundraiser filled with Bob Marley’s music, joyful dancing, and unity in green, gold, and black. This event raised £465, alongside further family contributions.

On 26th November, Woolwich Polytechnic School for Boys held “A Taste of Jamaica” - an extraordinary evening featuring home-cooked dishes, lively music, a quiz, and raffle prizes. Thanks to the dedication of staff and sixth form students, this event raised an incredible £2,251.92.

Together, our schools raised a grand total of £2,716.92 in aid of the Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund.

This achievement is a testament to the strength of our community - from those who donated prizes, shared their cooking talents, gave their time, and most importantly, gave so generously. Every penny will go directly to support those affected.

We are proud to celebrate this collective effort and grateful to everyone who made it possible. 💛💚🖤

Every year, from 20th November to 20th December, the UK observes Disability History Month (UKDHM) - a time dedicated to recognising the struggles, achievements, and contributions of disabled people throughout history. Established in 2010, UKDHM shines a light on the ongoing fight for equality and human rights, while encouraging society to challenge ableism and create inclusive spaces for all.

What Is Disability History Month?

UKDHM is more than a commemorative event; it is a movement. It aims to:

Celebrate the resilience and achievements of disabled individuals.

Educate about historical injustices, from institutionalisation to eugenics.

Advocate for systemic change, ensuring disabled voices lead conversations about rights and inclusion.

The month also aligns with key international observances such as World AIDS Day (1 Dec), International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 Dec), and Human Rights Day (10 Dec), reinforcing the global nature of disability rights.

Theme for 2025: “Disability, Life and Death”

This year’s theme, Disability, Life and Death, addresses pressing ethical and social questions surrounding assisted dying legislation currently debated in Parliament. Many disabled activists fear that such laws could undermine their right to life, echoing historical prejudices that once justified sterilisation, euthanasia, and exclusion under the guise of “mercy.”

The theme calls for reflection on:

The inherent value of disabled lives, as affirmed by Article 10 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Historical lessons, from Nazi-era atrocities to the eugenics movement, remind us why vigilance against discriminatory ideologies remain vital.

How Is It Celebrated?

Across the UK, organisations, schools, and communities host:

Educational events: Panels, lectures, and workshops exploring disability rights history.

Arts and culture programmes: Exhibitions like the V&A’s Design and Disability showcase the creative contributions of disabled artists.

Campaigns and activism: Trade unions, charities, and grassroots groups amplify disabled voices, demanding better access and inclusion in workplaces and public life.

Digital resources, storytelling projects, and social media campaigns also play a huge role in spreading awareness and fostering dialogue nationwide.

Why It Matters

Disability History Month reminds us that progress is not guaranteed. While landmark laws such as the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) and the Equality Act (2010) have advanced rights, systemic barriers persist. UKDHM is a call to action: to dismantle ableism, prioritise accessibility, and ensure that disabled people are not only included but empowered to lead.

Get Involved

Visit UKDHM.org for resources, event listings, and educational materials. Whether you attend a local event, share stories online, or advocate for inclusive policies, your participation helps build a society where every life is valued equally.

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are writing to express serious concerns about the unsafe driving practices observed around our school during drop-off times. We have received multiple complaints from members of the public, and as a result, Greenwich Council will be issuing fines to any drivers who stop on the roundabout to let their daughter out of the car.

In particular, we ask that you do not stop at the beginning of Birchdene Drive to drop off your daughter and then perform a U-turn, as this causes significant traffic build-up and poses a danger to students and other road users.

To ensure the safety of all, we kindly ask that you use one of the following safer alternatives:

KFC Car Park: Drop your daughter off here and allow her to walk through the underpass, so she does not need to cross the road.

End of Birchdene Drive: Drive all the way to the roundabout at the end, where it is safe to turn around and drop your daughter off.

Please also avoid using the staff car park entrance to turn around, as this blocks access for staff who need to get to work.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our students and community safe.

Kind regards,

As Remembrance Day approaches, we prepare to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and service of all those who have defended our freedoms in times of war and conflict. It is a time for reflection - a moment to remember those who gave their lives, those who returned forever changed, and the generations who continue to carry their legacy.

Across our schools, we are marking this important occasion through assemblies, creative tributes, and moments of silence, encouraging thoughtful engagement and respect.

We are also proud to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, with poppies being sold throughout our school communities. This initiative not only raises vital funds but also helps our young people understand the significance of remembrance and the values it represents.

In the lead-up to 11th November, we invite our community to reflect on the values of peace, unity, and gratitude. Let us come together to remember - and to reaffirm our commitment to building a future shaped by compassion and hope.

We will remember them.
