Dear Families,
Re: Amber Heat Alert and Amended School Timings
The Met Office has issued an Amber Heat Alert for Tuesday 23 June and Wednesday 24 June 2026. In light of this, it is important for health and safety reasons that we carry out a risk assessment of the school site.
Current forecasts suggest that temperatures could reach 34°C on Tuesday and 36°C on Wednesday. Temperatures in certain parts of the building may exceed these levels, particularly later in the day. While the school has some air-conditioned rooms and we have purchased additional fans, these measures are unlikely to sufficiently reduce temperatures during the hottest periods.
As a result, I have made the decision, on health and safety grounds, to adjust the timings of the school day on Tuesday 23 June and Wednesday 24 June 2026. Please see the amended times below.

We recognise that changes to the school day may be challenging for some families. We do have a limited number of air-conditioned spaces available, and we can accommodate some students on site until 3:00pm if needed. If you would like your daughter to remain in school for the full day, please email info@woolwichpolygirls.co.uk
Uniform Expectations:
- Students may wear their PE kit on the 23rd and 24th June if they choose.
- If your daughter wishes to wear skirt/trousers and her school shirt, she may leave her blazer and tie at home.
- Students should still bring their lanyard and other equipment for the school day.
Students are strongly encouraged to bring a refillable (non-glass) water bottle so they can stay hydrated throughout the day by using the water stations around the school during break and lunch.
For students in Year 10 sitting their sociology exam on Tuesday and students sitting their French listening exam on Wednesday these exams will take place in an air-conditioned space. Students will therefore be expected to sit these exams as normal, and they will be dismissed when the exam is finished.
If the forecast changes and the heat alert is carried forwards, we will share further information with families.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Yours sincerely,
Ms Williams
