Art & Design

At Woolwich Poly Girls, the students have access to a rich curriculum of Art and Design. The aims of the subject are to empower our students to:

  • Develop their creativity and imagination
  • Experiment and take artistic risks to achieve innovative and creative artwork
  • Enhance their problem-solving skills by designing and building 3D work
  • Explore a wide variety of materials and processes, allowing them to find their personal connection, passion or pathway to artistic expression
  • Become visually literate, and understand how to ‘read’ or infer meaning from a piece of art
  • Develop an appreciation of both traditional and contemporary art and artists, whilst learning to think critically and analyse artworks
  • Gain cultural capital in their knowledge of, and ability to talk about art, craft and design, understanding its importance in culture and society
  • Learn the importance of practice and resilience to master skills and cement knowledge
  • Enhance their ability to work within a group or team to create collaborative artworks and projects
  • Consider exciting careers and further education in an Art or Design field.

Your final grade will be based on:

  • 60% portfolio: Starting in Year 10, including a body of practical work and final piece
  • 40% externally set assignment: Beginning in January Year 11, including a body of work and a final piece created under exam conditions (10 hours)

Our belief is that each of our girls should leave school with a creative spark, the ability to contribute to their community, belief that they can achieve any artistic endeavour with hard work. They will have the knowledge and passion which inspires them to discuss art, visit galleries and continue their interest in art through their lives. Most importantly, our girls will develop the ability to express themselves creatively, imaginatively, and confidently.
